I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain

What is JDM?

Post by benjamin » January 09, 2006

Phunhaus and I got into somehwat of a heated debate as to what exactly jdm was in the midori hatch thread. Under the advice of Munster I am making a thred to continue this discussion because I am interested to understand what the rest of this forum thinks JDM is.

phunhaus puts forth that he belives JDM is nothing more than Japanese domestic market products, bodykits and engine components, that because of the variaty of parts makers in japan JDM could not possibly be a style as tuneshops in japan are making dramatically different products and cars.

While I belive this is a good point I feel that there are a group of generalizations one can make about JDM tuners in the US, that the members of this site, and other sites, have a specific style of japanese tuning in mind when they build up there cars, and this use of jdm parts, as well as specific styles of tuning that are japanese have influence and created a tuning culture that subsiqently is specifrically American.

JDM style as I see it is not japanese in the slightest... in fact is is very much an American "style"

I argue this point by asking anyone who disagrees with me to look at many of the cars in the member rides thred, and notice that these cars all are similar in many ways.

Jorgie's Midori Green Hatch Image Jezek's "Bumble Bee Hatch" Image JDM Kid's Gold Eg Hatch Image Clearly these cars, which were posted in the past month or so, have a very similar style... sure they are all hatches but even then.

JDM in the US is in my opinion a legitmate tuning style.

Yes there are many tuners who buy jdm parts, and put them on their cars, but this is not the same as what I am talking about. JDM style in the US is based around a specific trend in japanese auto tuning that occured from the late 90's into the early 2005, now car tuning in japan has dramatically changed, ironically to copy the US "over the top" tuning style made popular by Fast and the Furious.

I dont think that you can say that someone who built the evo from 2f2f but then has a voltex spoiler, though a jdm product, is in the same class as most if not all of the tuners at theJDM.com, and JDM style tuners everywhere.

but hey, thats just me.

What do you guys think?

lol...man....this is one of those conversations that will go on forever. here's what I have to say:

Technically, "jdm" is suppose to be using rare/hard to find parts manufactured in japan to build an oem style car in the U.S.

I don't really know the mod lists for the cars ( besides mine lol ) above, but I'm sure not every engine, exterior, interior part is straight from japan.

With "JDM" becoming more and more popular, peoples views on what jdm is changes in their minds and thus, into their cars. Some people may call my car "jdm" if they saw it. I would accept it, but I would never post my car up claiming "Jdm civic hatch!!" or anything like that.

It may be jdm styled but it isn't jdm imo....

I bet none of that made sense...lol...just my 2cents.

I agree completly, I do not think your or anyone elses car is jdm, but I think there is a jdm style in the US, and you aswell as many others have that style.

Definition of JDM: JDM is an acronym for 'Japanese Domestic Market'. All countries have domestic markets. In these markets, products are made and developed in that host country. Every profitable (and some not) have domestic markets, its part of a way to track their GDP (Gross domestic product) which is the amount of money totalling sales of that countries products.

The term JDM as most American Tuners know it has become morphed into a term that describes a type of style.

I agree with Benjamin wholy on this topic. In America, 'JDM' is a STYLE! Whether you use knock off products, or the real deal.

The term JDM has two meanings here in the states

*edit*

If you use the term JDM literally - you sound like an idiot when you make a post title that says "My JDM Civic EK" - translation "My Japanese Domestic Market CiviC EK" makes no sense.

I agree, I think that the term jdm has two meanings, both literal and as a slang term.

I mean, we could call jdm style something else and it would mean the same thing, but I see no reason not to call it JDM style so long as we understand what that connotates.

If I was going to say what my car is...I'd say a USDM hatch w/ a few jdm parts. Technically I shouldn't even call it an EK, but it's easier understood amongst the internet masses.

I agree with the "style" thing even though I hate calling it that. I think the style that we all follow is just cleanliness. Whether it's done with jdm parts or painting moldings and mirrors.

I think your missing the point.... I am not trying to argue, I am interested to know more about other peoples opinions and learn more about the "culture" of car tuning.

Yeah this is in the bamboo fighting pit, but not because we are at each others necks, but because opinions are like assholes, everyones gots one, so we decided to put it in the place where this disagreement could be best worked through.

I would work on my car but I havent bought it yet, and the other one is 8 miles away and its fucking freezing.
