I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain

curious to see what it will take

Post by ratboi » April 18, 2006

Hi guys, Im new the forum....just welcoming myself by asking question, Im more curious than serious about doing this...

If were to put an STI turbo on my 2005 WRX...what would I need to upgrade as well? And is it worth it, in other words, is the power a reasonable gain?

sorry if its a n00b question.

Yeah. About 60-70 peak horsepower worth. The WRX turbo, a Mitsubishi TD04L-13G, is much smaller than the IHI VF39 on the STi. The VF39 would be a cheaper route to upgrade your EJ20 with...rather than buying a whole other kit for it. I don't know about how much boost the stock EJ20's can hold, or if it will fit on the same manifold...might wanna check that out. I'd get some bigger injectors also.

04/05 wrx has the 2.5 block right? If it dose going a 20g would be about the right size. If you go with a vf34 or 39 you would have more power and touqe but after about 2 months you would want more but if it is a 2.0 then a vf34 will be nice. or a ported 18g would be good. It all comes down to what are you looking for a good everyday car with some balls, or one bad ass car that just screams. Bigger turbo more top end smaller turbo more bottom its a amatter of finding that middle point. I was going to go 18g but im going to stick with a vf34 itll be enough for me considering im getting a bike. plus i want an all around street car i perfer handleing of speed and power. Sorry i got long winded. hopefully this will help in some way.
*edit* If you go more then the stock turbo your going to have to upgrade the injectors and fuel pump... even if you go with the USDM Sti turbo(vf39). the stock turbo can handle 17lbs after that it get wayyyy hot. Even thought mine spike at 18.5 to 19 and tapers off to a stock 17.5lbs then itll drop down to a good 14.5 by redline, but thats what a protune will get you.

if u put a STI turbo on a WRX you will need to get a reflash and bigger injectors/fuel pump...

im putting a VF43 off a 2007 STI on mine. im using the jdm top feed STI "pink" 565CC injectors, 255 lph pump and cobb AP with a protune.

but it will work, and it will work well... trust me. DO IT you will love it.

pretty much all IHI turbos have the same inlet flange for the uppipe and the same 5 bolt (i think) bellmouth style outlet mounting style... so you will be good

with any turbo upgrade, expect to upgrade the fuel system as well. on the subaru youll need to do the injectors (sti pinks will be fine), fuel pump (sti or aftermarket one, either are fairly cheap), and get tuned (cobb's accessport version 2 has a vf39 map already on it). also, if you dont have a turbo back exhaust, youll be doing the turbo swap for pretty much no reason. gains via the stock exhaust are minimal. good luck to you and enjoy the car!
