I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain
H23 Hybrid Build, ITS OFFICIALLL!!!
haha, thats ok, i prefer stock over ghetto. although i used to here it was a pizza box trick. walmart bags is a first and actually sounds kinda shady, would imagine they burnt up after the first start. cant see a plastic bag withstanding any kinda of heat.T0DA wrote:Just use a few walmart bags for your hg, should do fine. It's what I did when I had to replace my headgasket
come to think of it i might use the pizza box trick. lol
Define Fast and reliable? H23 is a great engine and well capable of low-mid 14's NA AND being reliable. just depends on how far you want to go and how much you have to spend to make the power a H22 could for less money. One thing causing me to go away from building the H23 though was the more i researched about it the more practicle it seemed to get a H22. Can get a jdm engine for 1500 shipped where building a H23 head enough to even be capable of the H22 would cost just as much if not more and you still have to worry about the H23 bottom end (crank mainly[not forged, H22 is]).T0DA wrote:Yeah I was kidding, definately... haha.
So now, I'm actually thinking about cutting the shit and sourcing up my own h22 head and doing the same thing. Could a fast n/a h23 be possible? Sure. Would it be reliable and DD'able? Probably not.
The setup i will be running now i likely wont put this engine over 7000-7200 rpms, my goal is to have USABLE power up to around 6500-6800 rpm and set VTEC to around 4500-4800ish. next year after i tear the engine down and build the block i will push it more but with the stock H23 crank just not feeling to lucky to push it much farther. figure i will gain about 1000 rpms of USABLE power with this setup which should be enough to take a couple 10th of a sec off my lap times. car should be a mid 14sec car with stock internals and hopefully dip into the 13's after i get deeper into the build next winter.
Oh I have been all for the h23, I'm not one to argue because I like it's usuable low end more than anyone... Just saying, like you said with the money you could spend doing alot of work to an h23, you could just buy an h22 have the same results, but with alot more reliable of a motor (because there's nothing done to it that can mess up) if that makes sense.
Just got back from the machine shop. got the head cleaned and kinda assumed what would happen next. they said the head was warped so had it redone but 100$ later and alls good now; almost anyways. theres a nick in one of the valve passages which might cause a leak but we'll see. another 285$ gets me a full valve job though so we'll see what ends up happening with that.
Pics of the Head though. Rockers have some surface rust to them so kinda look like shit but head is alot cleaner.

this is what i was talking about with the messed up valve passage. looks like it sits just above the seal so shouldnt be a problem hopefully. after i get the valves lapped i should be able to see how much of a problem it will be if it is...
its the bottom right one, ignore the rust as that will be gone soon when im done 'lapping'
