I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain

B18B questions.

Post by boostjunkie95 » January 12, 2006

Hey what up. I've been thinking about shit canning my turbo sohc Z6 for a B18B and boosting it. I dont know a whole lot about them so I have a few questions. What is the horsepower limits on a B18B(OBD-1) with stock internals before shit starts bending and breaking? What else would I need besides the obvious motor, tranny, ECU, etc. to do the swap? It would be going in a 95 Civic EX. Would I need a whole different wiring harness being that my sohc is vtec and the B18B isnt? if I wanted to go LS/Vtec would I be able to use the harness I have now just with a different ECU? Any info. would definatley help me out. Thanks. Peace.

there are plenty of dohc honda motors on stock internals (both vtec and non vtec) that are up around 300whp and doing just fine ... i don't reccomend doing it, but it's been done.

Munster (a member on here) is at I BELIEVE 260ish whp on his stock internalled b18b, and it runs perfect (and a 12.90 i might add!)

Basically - as long as you don't do some hardcore tune on it, it'll be fine. Just make sure not to push it to its limits ... be conservative with it. Don't expect a rocket out of it, and it'll last.

Going with an obd1 LS, you'll just need the 'complete swap' that most online stores sell. Longblock, tranny, axles ... i'm pretty sure you can just use your harness with the inital swap and just leave anything vtec related hanging (which is only a plug or 2-3 wires i believe)

When going LS/VTEC you'll definately be able to use your civic harness ...

so what i suggest doing, is if the swap you buy includes a harness, use it at first that way everything is plugged in and no vtec related stuff is hanging... but keep your original harness on hand for when you go ls/vtec.

Are you turbocivic95 from boostedinc's website by chance? I'm 95gsr on there. welcome brotha

Yup that would be me. Thanks for the welcome brotha. Musters car rips, I saw the pics from the track on one of the other threads. We're gonna have to meet up sometime this spring in D-ville or Altoona, I want to go for a ride in that Teg. I'll bring a diaper just to be safe.....i dont want to get poo all over your passenger seat. That car is a beast, a sexy beast. I'm working on snatching up a b18b for my Civic, the sohc is nice....but its just not doing it for me anymore. I picked up a Baer big brake kit for it the other day so that put a dent in my b18 fund. No worries. I should have it up and rolling by spring.

Depending on what motor you have (you said it was a single cam, so I'm going to assume a D-series) I'd just do a TunerToys rods/Vitaris piston setup and turn up the boost with the SOHC motor.

On another note (and back to the original question at hand) as it's already been mentioned, b18b's bottom ends are usually safe around 275whp, and still damn quick too. A buddy of mine has an obd1 b18b in his ('96, '98?) Civic coupe and just recently got all his turbo stuff on it. It's hanging right beside STi's with several mods, and only tuned on a basemap for now... It won't let you down! :)
