Post subject:  So I scanned my computer for viruses tonight.

Well let me explain something first. I traded my desktop that I got for 75 dollars (after like 8 rebates... 2.4ghz Dell, in case you are wondering, with upgraded memory so it was really like 275) for this tiny laptop (1.6 ghz, 512kb of ram, 24x cd burner DVD+/-R Burner, whatever). The kid I got it from is a friend of mine that is in the Marines. I was with him when he picked it out, and I liked everything about it.

Well. Being a Marine, if you are connected to their network, you MUST have an administrator approved antivirus search scheduled at least once a week. And it can not be disabled unless it has whoever's password (to disable, uninstall, change it at all). I figured it wasn't a bad thing, Because I wouldn't have to manually search for virii whenever I thought about it. It was being done for me at 8pm on Friday night, when normally, I am not near my computer anyways.

Everytime I started my computer, though, It would come up with "winlog.exe infected". The first time I thought it had said it was deleted. Actually everytime, it said it was deleted. Apparently it ever was. The virus was using bearshare to download and host other viruses on my computer, all of which made sure the initial virus was still intact. So deleting just one made no difference.

I downloaded AVG, ran it. 2 hours later I look at my computer, still scanning. Alright whatever. I am curious to how many virus's it had found, though. It was at about 22,000 scanned files at that point. The number of INFECTED files... 17,294 (and growing with EACH FILE it had scanned). So I let it do its thing, start scanning again after I came back to my computer and realized the program wasn't there, at all, anymore. Shit.

All the files are still there. I am not waiting 3 hours for this crap again. I look at the location of the files, reboot in safemode, and luckily it was just a bunch of crap in a single folder (for the most part). I deleted the folder, scanned again... done in like 30 minutes. Had 11 more viruses to remove, removed those sumbitches, restarted, downloaded a new anti-spyware prog because apparently mine was worthless, got rid of all that shit (I recognized some of it, the sketchy software I installed that was also spyware, also downloaded the viruses). And just to make sure I had it all, I ran AVG one more time in safe mode, and Adaware, AND Spybot S&D.

SO I think I am clean right now.

Although not being able to open up my task manager, and when I go to look at the comand prompt and it saying "another program is using this application"... makes me not quite sure where to go from here. Nothing detects anything is wrong, but obviously something is not right.

I can thank my friend for downloading a "myspace spammer" on my computer over Bearshare for this hell I am going through.

Oh yeah, and the final count on viruses the first time I scanned was something like 24,000 infected files.

turn off system restore (xp right?) and reboot in safemode and scan one more time. If anything is in windows\* folders, system restore will automatically re-place those files if they are deleted or manipulated. Well viriuses disable the service, add theirselves to the folders, enable the service and then play hide-n-go-seek with your AV software. I would try that and have it scan that shit again. Becareful of what you download over those peer-to-peer shits. Lots of people get nasty virii from that stuff anymore.
