I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain

weight of steelies?

Post by *CACKYWHEELS » July 17, 2008

I'm trying to pump a few extra mpg out of my Civic, and first place to start is the wheels!

How much do 14" steelies weigh?

How much does increasing the size of the wheel VS tire effect the mpg?

I'm considering running 14s with the same sized tires as my stockies or upgrading to 15s, and running a 55 series tire.

Appreciate the input!

And 15" steelies with smaller tires will still weight more than your 14's

You're cheapest bet would probobly be some VX alloys

Well I wouldn't run 15" steelies for sure. I would run 15" regamaster EVOs (one of the lightest wheels out there) or dare I say.. konig.. heliums..

In any case, thanks for the input! Any idea on how much the VXs weight?

Now I just need to get some coilovers and be on my merry way.

(any idea if the civic hybrid wheels are any lighter than regas/heliums/etc?)

well, vx's with 165-70-13 tires weight 25lbs, so im estimating around 10lbs w/o tires. so 36lbs weight loss for all 4 from 14" steelies

The only issue I have with that, is the fact that I will be running 13s.. Not sure I want to go that small.. I am probably going to keep it at least 14, most 15..

Ya just figured you were looking for a super-light, cheap solution

Yeah, super-light is definitely a goal of mine, but cheap isn't too much of a concern.. This doesn't mean I am going to allow myself to buy brand new 15" RE30s or anything.. Guess I shouldn't have passed up those 700 dollar 15" regas with tires!

I guess what I really need to know now, is who makes the lightest tires?

For 14's? Prolly Bridgestone RE920 they are only 15lbs. Lightest I could find were Hoosier Sport Car DOT Radial at 14lbs. Those are at 185/60/14

For 195/50/15 your looking at 17lbs. Thats for Toyo Proxies FZ4

Holy crap I have the 920s on my car right now! I got them for free they've lasted me forever and a day as well...

Awesome. Now I just need to find myself some rims!
