I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain

Sony can suck my big fat...

Post by CivicSpoon » January 04, 2007

2 broken PS2's and now a broken DVD-/+RW drive.
When I e-mailed Sony customer support, told them in detai what the problem was and what I had already tried to fix it myself, I got this response:
"As the drive test will not see the blank disc to run, your drive needs to be replaced. Your Product is no longer covered for the limited technical support warranty. After 90 days from the date of your first call to technical support, the cost of technical support is $19.95 and applies to each solution. You can pay to have the drive repaired. The cost is $100.00."

HAAAAAA! These assholes want me to pay them $20 for each time I call, only to have them tell me to do things I've already tried. And they want me to pay $100+ shipping both ways (I'm sure) for them to fix a 3-4yr old drive; when I can get a better dual layer burner for for around half that. Screw Sony, I'll NEVER buy another Sony product again.

What do you expect for a 4 year old product? for them to just give you a new one? Unfortunately, that's not how things work. Manufacturers like Sony usually have a LIMITED one or two year warranty on parts, not labor.

Sucks, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

I just figured they'd back up their product and give me a little more advice on things to try myself. Exspecially when it worked fine for 2 and a half years and then suddenly stopped working. And at the same time it stopped working, I wasn't able to download windows updates or do a defrag; so I assumed it would be something software or driver related. I'm still not convinced that it needs to be physically repaired. I understand that it's a 4 yr old product and they're more concerned with new products having issues, I just think they should help a little more no matter how old it is. If I got my car tuned for years ago and started having problems, I'd expect the original tuner to at least help me out a little in finding the problem (over the phone, through e-mail or on a message board; not in person of course). But unfortunately you're correct, and big businesses don't care about having satisfied repeat customers anymore.
